PING BRUM - OUTDOOR TABLE TENNIS VOLUNTEERING

The National Ping Project will see 60 table tennis tables being placed on the streets of Birmingham from the 8th July for one month. During this month, they intend to run a full programme of fun activities aiming to get as many people playing table tennis as possible.

As part of this, they are looking to train volunteers to support English Table Tennis Association (ETTA) Coaches with the delivery of Ping and table tennis activities. This is social table tennis at its best. See www.pinglondon.com for a look at what they did last year.

Please advertise the Ping Volunteer training sessions to anyone you feel may be interested in helping us out and having a good time. No experience is necessary but you must be over 16 and have an interest in volunteering.

There will be no charge for the training and volunteers who support the Ping Project will receive a free Ping goody bag too.

The two dates for the training are June 21st and 27th at Hamstead Hall School in Birmingham. There are 6 outdoor tables here for people to practice on.

Please see attached letter for more information.

THIS FRIDAY - Urban dance and music showcase for Acorns Hospices

Image002
PRESS RELEASE
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
4 May 2011

IDENTITY Showcase: An urban dance and music showcase in aid of Acorns Children's Hospice

A Birmingham student has become an ITV Fixer to organise an urban dance and music event to raise money for a local children’s hospice.

Anisa Haghdadi (21), a student at Aston Business School, also volunteers at Acorns Children’s Hospice, which cares for terminally ill children and their families across the West Midlands.

She has organised a the IDENTITY Showcase to promote the talents of local young people from the Birmingham area. The show will give them a platform to express themselves through urban art forms and a chance to get involved in something positive in society.

Anisa hopes to raise money and awareness for the hospices whilst providing entertainment for the local community. She says: “I was motivated to put on this event firstly as there is a vast lack of community-based events which harness and promote the talents of our local young people, and secondly as I am inspired by the fantastic work that Acorns do caring for life-limited children.”

Acts confirmed so far include the world record-breaking Dhol Blasters and Britains Got Talent's Kombat Breakerz as well as the Identity Dance Collective. There has already been a great response to this event across Birmingham, says Anisa, and many young people are volunteering to help organise and promote it as well as actually performing at the event. From MCs to street dancers - there is something for everyone!

“We need as many people to come and support our event as possible,” says Anisa. “We also are still looking for sponsors to get involved and help us reach our target fundraising amount for Acorns.”

Sponsors confirmed so far include: The Academy of Chief Executives, Change Kitchen, Fifteen Minute Trainer, Honister Partners and Martineau Solicitors.

ITV Fixers with vinspired.com is a major campaign giving young people between the ages of 16-25 the opportunity to tackle any issue that they feel strongly about. What they choose to do is up to them as long as it benefits at least one other person.

Margo Horsley, executive producer for ITV Fixers with vinspired.com, says: “ITV Fixers are young people setting the agenda and changing stereotypes. We want to give young people the chance to decide what they want to do, develop their own projects, and give them a little bit of help if needed. I’ve seen how energetic and committed they are when what they’re doing means something to them. What we’re seeing has really made me question whether young people deserve such a bad press.”

The details of the IDENTITY Showcase are:

Date: Friday 13th May 2011. Doors open at 7.30pm and the show begins at 8pm.

Where: Birmingham Library Theatre, Paradise Place, B3 3HQ
Tickets: £5 and all proceeds go to Acorns Children's Hospice

Film Info:

If Muslims ever felt their voice in the west / America wasn't being heard, there is a riveting film called MOOZ-lum that is stepping in the right direction. Not only does it confront the current anti-Islamic attitude in America post-9/11 head-on, it reveals the struggles faced within the Muslim community.

MOOZ-lum takes movie goers into the life of Tariq, played by Evan Ross - the eldest son in a Muslim-American family who struggles to balance their needs within the Islamic value system throughout the film - as he overcomes the life-long negative experiences he's had with the faith during his first year of college in 2001. The faith of his sister Taqua, played by newcomer Kimberley Drummond, his Muslim room mate Hamza (Kunal Sharma), and his girlfriend Iman (Summer Bishil) are also put to the test when non-Muslim students on campus react to the 9/11 attacks.

The aforementioned family struggle between Tariq's father Hassan (Roger Guenveur Smith) and mother Safiyah (Nia Long) is a sub-narrative that reveals how conflict of religious conservatism divides a Muslim-American family living in a Christian society. Each character successfully highlights multiple facets within the faith from a communal, family, and personal standpoint because it's based on a true story.

Followed by a Q&A with the film’s director Qasim Basir

Age Certificate: PG
